Book Description on Amazon.com

This is not a typical college textbook. This book focuses on the knowledge and skills that a quality engineer needs to know in order to be successful in his or her chosen career.

In each chapter the topics are explained in a conversational manner and a college degree in engineering is not necessary in order to understand and master the skills presented in this book. Technical words and quality engineering terms are carefully explained using simple words. Practical examples are used to demonstrate how to work each of the equations presented in this book. The final answer to each equation is then interpreted in practical terms that explains how the answer could be used to make a good engineering decision or a good management decision.

This book includes a condensed explanation of probability theory, statistics, linear regression, reliability, acceptance sampling, control charts, statistical process control, lean six sigma, root cause analysis, teamwork, quality standards, metrology, calibration, and gage repeatability and reproducibility.

This book discusses the concepts in each chapter from a traditional perspective without relying on computer software. After you understand how these concepts actually work and you understand when each concept should be used, then it is not too difficult to learn how to use a software program that will generate the answers for you. However, since software programs are updated and changed every two or three years, this book does not recommend or explain how to use specific software programs.

Preface to
Introduction to Quality Engineering

My qualifications for writing this book are as follows.

For 37 years from 1984 to 2021 I taught quality courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels at Kennesaw State University. I taught courses in statistics, advanced statistical applications, industrial experimentation, systems reliability, quality management, statistical quality control, lean six-sigma process improvement, inspection system design, supplier evaluation, team dynamics, and employee recruitment & selection. I own and I have read college textbooks dedicated to each of the preceding topics and I used those textbooks to teach the courses just mentioned. Each course in the preceding list was dedicated exclusively to the topic mentioned and they were not survey courses that included lots of different topics.

In 1991 I was certified as a Boeing Advanced Quality Systems Instructor and I taught their Advanced Quality Systems Seminars to their suppliers for several years.

For 14 years from 1989 to 2003 I taught a variety of quality seminars for the American Society of Quality (ASQ).

For 18 years from 1991 to 2019 I also taught comprehensive review courses for the following quality certification exams. The following certification exams were offered and administered by the American Society for Quality.
  1. Certified Quality Engineer (CQE).
  2. Certified Quality Technician (CQT).
  3. Certified Quality Manager (CQM).
  4. Certified Quality Auditor (CQA).
On several occasions I also taught an 80-hour review course for the CQE exam for the quality employees who were working for Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Company at three of their facilities in the USA. And I also taught a review course for the CQE exam for the quality employees who were working for Anheuser Bush at three of their facilities in the USA.

Respectfully,
Robert Wayne Atkins, P.E.
