The Good Old Days

Man in Hard hat It seems there are fewer people now engaged in honest labors.
It is getting so bad you can't even trust some of your neighbors.

People skillfully cheat one another whenever they can.
Those in power are quick to defraud a widow or orphan.

Evil doers make careful plans how to shed innocent blood,
and then deny any wrongdoing as their victims are buried.

Everywhere bribes have been accepted by rulers and judges.
Even our most trusted leaders have passed laws to enslave us.

Within our own families, there are some who bear our own name,
Young Woman's Face who will turn on us and betray us if it brings them worldly gain.

What kind of godless age is this that we now live in,
when behavior like the above is really quite common?

That was the question asked long ago by the prophet Micah,
about 700 years before the birth of the Messiah.

Sometimes we think the good old days must have been better.
But people have not changed, they have only gotten smarter.

In every age we must each choose between good and evil.
Who will you follow: a righteous God or a wicked devil?

Reference Scripture Verses

Micah 6:11 - Shall I acquit a man with dishonest scales, with a bag of false weights?

Micah 7:2-6 -The godly have been swept from the land; not one upright man remains. All men lie in wait to shed blood; each hunts his brother with a net. Both hands are skilled in doing evil; the ruler demands gifts, the judge accepts bribes, the powerful dictate what they desire -- they all conspire together. The best of them is like a brier, the most upright worse than a thorn hedge. Do not trust a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Even with her who lies in your embrace be careful of your words. For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law -- a man's enemies are the members of his own household.

Ecclesiastes 7:10 - Do not say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.
